Just like Windows computer, Macs begin to slow down with age — MacBook Pro, iMac, they all will. To bring it back to speed, Mac also needs regular cleanup— remove the useless file to improve its performance and make it run faster. Luckily, you could do it on your own with free Mac in-built cleaner tools.

Clean your Mac’s hard drive

1. Uninstall old apps

Just look in the Applications and Downloads, you might find some ancient apps that might not be at service anymore. Move the old and unnecessary apps to the Trash to get back some hard-drive space.

2. Close resource-hogging processes

Mac’s Activity Monitor shows all the processes on your Mac (some of which you can’t or shouldn’t shut down). Close the memory-hogging processes temporarily could give your Mac a rest and make it run smoother.

1) Go to Activity Monitor by clicking on View and Windowed Processes.

2) Click into CPU or Memory column. Choose the big one and click X button on the top left of the window.

3. Delete large, unused files

You can use Finder to search for huge files. To do so, open Finder and select the volume you'd like to search.

1) Choose File > Find (or hit Command-F). Click on the Kind drop-down menu and select Other.

2) When the Select a search attribute window opens, check the box for File Size, uncheck any other boxes, and click OK.

3) Change the equals drop-down menu option to is greater than and change KB to MB. You may now delete any files that show up on the list that you no longer need or move them to a cloud storage.

4. Empty the Trash

Reduce Startup Items

If your Mac is slow to boot up, the problem may be that there are too many apps to open at startup.

1) Go to System Preferences > Users & Groups, click on the Login Items tab to see a list of the apps that would open during Mac bootup.

2) Choose the apps you don't want to open at startup and click the - button below the list of apps.

Give up some of those cool visual effects

Any of the nifty visual effects your Mac uses can slow it down if it's an older model. To turn them down:

Go to System Preferences>Dock. Then switch Genie effect to Scale effect. The Scale effect animation causes less burden on your Mac.
