User Profile Service failed the logon

“The User Profile Service failed the logon” error message usually occurs when you type your password and try to access your Windows account. It indicates that your user profile has been corrupted and you cannot sign in your Windows right now.

Fortunately, this annoying error could be fixed in easy ways and we’ll show you exactly how to do it in this post.

Restart Your Computer First

Windows could have trouble in reading your user profile if you happen to have an antivirus scan running at the same time. Restart your computer, try to log in, and you might be able to successfully get in this time. Otherwise, follow the methods below.

Create a New User Profile

If you have another user account on Windows which you can log in to, you may be able to use this account to create a new user account by just following Step 2.

However, if there is no other account, then boot into Safe Mode and enable hidden administrator account by following steps.

Step 1 Boot into Safe Mode and enable the hidden admin account

-> Boot into Safe Mode.

-> Type cmd in the search box on the Start menu, and then right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.

-> When the prompt opens, type: net user administrator /active:yes

Now restart your computer and you should see an Administrator account and your corrupt account.

Step 2 Create a new user account

->Open Control Panel from the Start Menu. Select User Account and Family Safety, and then click User Accounts.

->Click Manage another account, then choose to Create another account. Enter a name for your new profile.

-> Click Administrator, and click Create Account.

Step 3 Copy your old data to this new account

Go to your old user profile, which you can find in My PC or This Computer. Copy the data you need and move to your new profile.

Fix Corrupted User Profile

If you are confident in using a computer, you may want to try to fix the corrupted Windows file by correcting its registry value on your own. Always remember to backup your Registry first.

If you do not want to mess up with your computer, you could use registry repair tool like Neptune SystemCare to help you with the registry problem. You can follow the steps in Best two ways to fix registry error in Windows 10.

Step 1 Backup First

->Open regedit by right click Start button and choose to open Run box. Enter regedit in the box.

->Go to Computer by scrolling to the very top of the left side of the registry (where all the "folders" are).

->Click File on the navigation pane, and then click Export.

A dialogue box will ask us where to save the backup file.

Step 2 Correct the registry value

->Open regedit by right click Start button and choose Run. Enter regedit in the box.

->Go to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

-> Click each S-1-5 folder and double-click the ProfileImagePath entry.

-> Once you have found out the user profile which does not have “a .bak” ending, double-click on the entry RefCount and change the Value data to 0 and click OK.

-> Then Double click on the entry State to change the value to 0.

-> Close Registry Editor and restart your PC.

If you're still unable to fix the problem and can't log in after you tried all the methods above, you might consider reinstalling Windows.
